2010 NPC Annual Meeting Awards

The National Potato Council (NPC) presented awards for outstanding leaders and visionaries in the potato industry at the 2010 NPC Annual Meeting.

David Radtke with San Luis Hills Farms and Jim Tiede with James Tiede Farms were presented the prestigious NPC Environmental Stewardship Award.  The award is a component of the Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program, a partnership between the National Potato Council and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, to protect the environment and promote the safe and effective use of pesticides.  San Luis Hills Farms of Fort Garland, Colorado and James Tiede Farms of American Falls, Idaho use frequent monitoring which allows them to only apply crop protection products when they are really needed.  Both farms were selected based on their on-farm pesticide risk reduction practices, use of Integrated Pest Management practices, use of biological control or alternative pest control methods, water and habitat protection, and resistance management practices-all of which were accomplished without any compromise of yield or quality.

The 2009 Seed Grower of the Year Award was presented to Mike Telford of Paul, Idaho.  This award is presented annually to honor seed growers who demonstrate extraordinary leadership both on the farm and throughout the potato industry.  Telford is well known for his high level of integrity, vision and commitment to his work and has served in leadership roles in state and national potato organization and has worked tirelessly to improve the potato industry.

The Meritorious Service Award is presented annually to a researcher whose work has provided help to the industry in addressing issues that impact potato production.  The 2009 Meritorious Service Award was presented to Marty Glynn.  Glynn has more than 38 years experience conducting potato research and has conducted valuable research on bruising and other defects. His work on storage issues such as effects of CO2 and stress on internal quality of the potato has directly added to market quality and value.

"We see POTATO EXPO as a really good event to attend," said Tommy Fleetwood, North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Marketing Supervisor. "It gives us a chance to network with the entire potato industry in North America. This is definitely the event for the North Carolina Potato Association to attend and for the entire North American potato industry to be represented at."

"POTATO EXPO is quite a show," said Duane Preston, Professor Emeritus and Retired Extension Educator-Potatoes with the University of Minnesota. "Growers from North Dakota, Minnesota and all over North America attended to see all the good potato information and visited the trade show booths while participating in all the fun and fellowship."

"This is my first time attending POTATO EXPO, and I'm looking forward to seeing and learning about new advancements I can take back to my fresh pack facility," said Kevin Searle, General Manager of GPOD in Shelley, ID.

The POTATO EXPO's trade show was a focal point of activity, a clear value for exhibitors.  "It's a very good deal for us, and we're really glad to be here," said Danny Mitchell, President at Milestone of Blackfoot, ID, a manufacturer of seed cutters and potato handling equipment. "There are a lot of people here, and they represent the 'Who's Who' of the North American potato industry."

At POTATO EXPO 2010, top-notch speakers provided attendees with timely information during general sessions and sector specific breakout sessions for the chip, fresh, processed and seed potato sectors. Participants chose to attend a variety of sector specific meetings where more than 40 speakers made presentations.

General Session Speakers

"The Future of the Potato" was the title of J.R. Simplot Company President and CEO Bill Whitacre's presentation addressing the role the potato will play in the future and how we can ensure the relevance of the potato in the future. He discussed the genetic evolution of the potato and the opportunities for moving food production forward with new technologies designed to meet different consumer requirements and to feed a growing world population.

"Over the next decade, our industry will continue to change, and that will mean the potato industry will have additional opportunities," Whitacre said. "Many of these will come from technological advancements. We need to embrace these technologies and recognize the capabilities and possibilities these will bring to the future of food production."

Harry Balzer, a widely-known food consumption expert and Vice President with the NPD Group presented "Eating Patterns in America." He highlighted over 30 years of domestic food consumption data and identified significant trends on how and what Americans are eating and drinking. According to Balzer, 78 percent of all Americans consume potatoes during the week, making it the third most consumed food in the country.

The POTATO EXPO 2010 keynote speaker was author and columnist Dave Barry. From 1983 to 2005, Barry wrote a nationally syndicated humor column for The Miami Herald. He has also written numerous books of humor and parody, as well as comedic novels. Well-known for his internationally syndicated column, Barry addressed major issues including the economy and the future of democracy by defining them with wit and humor. Barry won a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1988, "for his consistently effective use of humor as a device for presenting fresh insights into serious concerns."
